The exceptional musical stage work «Renaissance: Crete between Venice and Constantinople», composed by the composer Yannis Markopoulos, in 2 acts and 4 sections, opened the Greek Music Circle of the Athens Concert Hall for the artistic period 1995-1996. In 1997 the composer, invited by Belgian state cultural institutions, transcribed the work for a full symphony orchestra and presented it at the Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels.
The libretto is organized and assembled by Yannis Markopoulos himself, many times in verses of the same, with arias in choral ensemble, old texts of the last Byzantine emperor, texts of anonymous and surnamed Byzantine scholars, special choices from the Renaissance and modern Greek poetry, with poems by George Seferis, George Giatromanolakis and George Sarantaris. According to the composer in his special note on the work, he is inspired by great historical events that marked Hellenism, letting his imagination wander to the old musical sounds played by the companies of Constantinople, Venice and the cities of Crete and Asia Minor.
